Democratic Governance can be understood as the capacity of a society to define and establish policies and resolve their conflicts peacefully within the existing legal order. This is a necessary condition for the rule of law along with the separation of powers and a legal system that ensures the enjoyment of individual freedoms and rights -civil, social, political and cultural. This requires institutions based on the principles of equity, freedom, participation in decision making, accountability, and promoting the inclusion of the most vulnerable sectors of society.

UNDP works on different thematic areas -Local Governance, Decentralization and Institutional Reform and Justice and Security Reform. It promotes knowledge management and the participation with inclusion (especially of women, youth, persons with disabilities, afrodescendent people and indigenous groups), as well as the strengthening of government institutions to ensure better conditions for human development for our countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
